Like all the land in this valley, they've only ever been good for grazing. Our particular landscape has been created by sheep and if it is to continue to look the way it does, the sheep have to stay. Since the biggest of our fields is registered as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest we are expected to look after the land "in a manner that is sympathetic to its wildlife interest". The fields (unimproved grassland that is supposed to sit high in the conservation agenda) were an important reason to come here in the first place, so it's unlikely we're going to cover them with conifers or mulch them with plastic for a quick crop of strawberries.
